Who Are You?
Yes. I’m hearing the Who sing that song in my head as I write this. How about you? ;-)
But think about it. Do you know who you are? Where do you get your identity from? How do you define yourself?
If you’re a woman of faith, do you really know who you are? Do you know that you are a daughter of a King? This gets me thinking about princesses. What is a daughter of a King like?
If you’re like me, the term ‘princess’ can bring up thoughts of bratty, entitled-type women who think of nothing more than looks and popularity, pouting when they don’t get their way, and spending most of their days singing ‘someday my prince will come.’ I was never a big fan of those princesses, even in fairy tales. (Not that I haven’t behaved that way in my lifetime at times. No. Really. But we’ll get to that later.)
But even the Bible tells us that “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain.”
There’s another archetype that comes to mind when considering a ‘daughter of a King’ as well. They’re the ones who were probably educated, taught to be wise, compassionate, caring of ‘their father’s people’, gracious, and possessing a gentle strength and quiet confidence.
She’s privileged, but aware of it and is therefore generous. She is confident, not only in who she is but because of who her father is. She knows she has influence with the King, but wields that influence responsibly.
She isn’t idle. She spends time wisely, and helps others.
She knows she’s protected. After all, who in their right mind would mess with the King’s daughter, right? And if they do, she knows her father, the King, will send legions in battle after her. (Personally, I always like the stories of the ones who, once rescued, are also able to pick up a sword and join in the battle.)
Knowing who you are, having your own identity, rather than depending on others is important. But if you’re a daughter of the King, that’s an identity that can’t be taken away from you. It’s not something that comes from other people. It’s who you are, and always will be.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and would love it if you’d share your thoughts in the comments. Do you know you’re a daughter (or son) of a King? How does that change how you see yourself or your what you do? What impact does that have on how you feel? What impact does it have on your behavior?
Love,
deb
